Therapy Groups & Educational Workshops at River City OCD Clinic

At River City OCD Clinic, we believe meaningful growth often happens not only through individual work, but also through shared learning, practice, accountability, and connection with others facing similar challenges.

Our therapy groups and educational workshops are designed to provide supportive, structured environments where participants can deepen their understanding of OCD, anxiety, perfectionism, psychological flexibility, mindfulness, and related topics while developing practical tools for daily life.

Some groups focus more directly on therapeutic skill-building and relapse prevention, while others emphasize psychoeducation, guided reflection, and applying evidence-based concepts through collaborative discussion and experiential learning.

Our groups are informed by approaches such as:

Whether you are looking for ongoing support, structured discussion, practical skill development, or opportunities to stay engaged in long-term recovery work, our groups are intended to foster growth, consistency, and meaningful connection over time.

What to Expect From Our Groups & Workshops

Our groups are designed to balance structure, education, discussion, and practical application. While each group has its own format and focus, participants can generally expect:

  • Guided discussions and facilitated exercises

  • Opportunities for reflection and collaborative learning

  • Practical strategies that can be applied outside of meetings

  • ACT-informed and evidence-based concepts

  • A respectful, supportive environment

  • Emphasis on long-term growth rather than perfection

Some groups may involve more active therapeutic work, while others are primarily educational and discussion-based. Individual group pages provide additional details regarding format, expectations, and whether the service is considered psychotherapy or psychoeducation.

Why Group-Based Learning & Support Can Matter

Growth and change often happen in isolation less frequently than we imagine. Many individuals struggling with OCD, anxiety, perfectionism, self-criticism, or emotional avoidance spend significant time feeling alone in their experiences or believing they “should” already know how to handle difficult thoughts and emotions on their own.

Group-based learning and support can create opportunities to step out of that isolation and engage with others who are navigating many of the same challenges. Hearing different perspectives, sharing ideas, practicing new skills collaboratively, and recognizing common patterns across people can help foster greater self-awareness, flexibility, and compassion.

For many individuals, groups also provide:

  • Increased accountability and consistency

  • Ongoing reinforcement of therapeutic concepts and skills

  • Opportunities to practice vulnerability and openness

  • Exposure to new perspectives and coping strategies

  • A greater sense of connection and shared humanity

  • Continued engagement in long-term recovery and growth

While every participant’s experience is different, many people find that group settings help normalize struggles that previously felt isolating or overwhelming. Groups can also create space for meaningful reflection, experimentation, encouragement, and learning in ways that complement individual work and everyday life.

At River City OCD Clinic, our groups and workshops are intended to support practical application, psychological flexibility, long-term growth, and meaningful connection, not perfection or performance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Group Therapy

Are these groups considered therapy?

Some groups offered through River City OCD Clinic are psychotherapy-based groups, while others are educational workshops or psychoeducational experiences. Individual group pages include details regarding the format, structure, and whether participation constitutes psychotherapy or educational programming.

What is the difference between a therapy group and an educational workshop?

Therapy groups are designed to provide clinical treatment and therapeutic support led by licensed mental health professionals. Educational workshops focus more on learning, discussion, reflection, and skill development without providing psychotherapy or establishing a therapist–patient relationship.

Do I need to be an existing River City OCD Clinic client to participate?

Not necessarily. Eligibility may vary depending on the specific group or workshop. Some offerings are open to community members who are not currently receiving individual therapy at River City OCD Clinic.

Are groups focused only on OCD?

While many of our groups are informed by expertise in OCD and anxiety treatment, discussions and skills may also address related topics such as perfectionism, mindfulness, self-criticism, emotional avoidance, stress, psychological flexibility, and long-term wellness.

Are groups held in person or virtually?

Format varies by group. Some meetings are held in person at River City OCD Clinic in Louisville, Kentucky, while others may be offered virtually. Please review individual group pages for current scheduling and format details.

Will insurance cover group participation?

We are a private-pay practice and do not accept insurance. You may request a "superbill" that can be submitted to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement for all therapy groups. Educational workshops and psychoeducational programs are generally self-pay services and may not qualify for insurance reimbursement.

River City OCD Clinic does not communicate with insurance companies on behalf of patients. Reimbursement is not guaranteed, and all reimbursement decisions are determined solely by your insurance provider. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to understand your out-of-network benefits. We also accept HSA/FSA payments and provide Good Faith Estimates in compliance with the No Surprises Act.

What if I miss a meeting?

We understand that schedules and unexpected events arise. Attendance expectations and policies may vary depending on the structure of the group or workshop. The majority of groups and workshops offered at River City OCD Clinic do not charge fees for missed meetings.

How do I know which group is the best fit for me?
